Vous avez été invité par le festival Jazz à la Villette pour présenter votre nouveau projet Afro Picks. Pouvez-vous nous en dire un peu plus ?
Le projet Afro-Picks est une sélection de 11 titres de musique africaine. Il s’agit d’un hommage à l’histoire musicale africaine avec notamment des reprises de Fela ou de Miriam Makeba. Ces chansons sont un hymne à la beauté de ce continent et de son peuple, mais elles dénoncent également des systèmes oppressifs tels que l’Apartheid. Ce projet consiste à redécouvrir des grands classiques de la musique africaine afin que le public se rende compte que les thèmes abordés sont toujours d’actualité. En réarrangeant ces titres, j’ai souhaité rendre hommage à la musique africaine afin d’inspirer la scène musicale de demain.

Quel est l’origine de ce projet artistique ?
L’influence de la musique africaine était déjà présente dans mes projets précédents et j’ai eu la chance de collaborer avec des légendes telles que Tony Allen et David Murray, et de m’imprégner de la rythmique puissante de la musique afrobeat. Je voulais également m’inspirer d’une époque où les gens prenaient conscience de leur condition sociale grâce à la musique.

Afro Picks incarne votre vision de l’Afrique. Que représente l’Afrique pour vous ?
Plein de choses ! L’Afrique est la terre d’origine de chacun de nous. Son héritage est immense. Elle est une source d’inspiration pour la musique actuelle. Les habitants de ce magnifique continent sont chaleureux, souriants et sont dotés d’une patience incroyable malgré leur souffrance.

L’afro-centrisme est désormais omniprésent aux Etats-Unis. Comment expliquez-vous cet engouement ?
L’Afrique et sa diaspora ont toujours été liées. L’afro-centrisme était déjà très présent à travers le monde pendant le militantisme des années 70. Je pense que tous les originaires d’Afrique à cette époque ont réalisé qu’ils se battaient pour la même cause. La musique a servi d’outil à cette révolution culturelle qui s’est propagée des deux côtés de l’Atlantique. Je pense que l’Afro-centrisme a toujours existé, chacun souhaite connaître, comprendre et transmettre son histoire auprès des jeunes générations.

Vous êtes déjà allé en Afrique ?
Oui, et je suis récemment allé en Afrique du Sud pour faire un DJ set. Je suis toujours émerveillé par l’énergie de ce peuple. De nombreux artistes talentueux arrivent parfois à créer des choses incroyables avec absolument rien ! Je suis sûr que l’Afrique peut encore apporter énormément, en particulier sur le plan culturel et qu’elle continuera à fasciner le monde entier.

Afro Picks est un projet captivant qui parvient à lier l’art et la politique. L’engagement politique a toujours fait partie de l’univers musical de the Roots. Pensez-vous être un éternel militant ?
Malheureusement, nous vivons encore dans un monde submergé par des inégalités. En tant que musicien, j’ai la chance de pouvoir créer – à travers le hip hop ou grâce à des projets comme Afro-picks – une musique qui reflète les problèmes sociopolitiques actuels et qui s’adresse à un public plus large. A l’instar de Fela, j’ai compris que des textes engagés et positifs avaient beaucoup d’impact sur les gens. J’ai bien l’intention de continuer dans cette voie.

Comment avez-vous sélectionné les musiciens pour ce projet (David Murray, Macy Gray, Tony Allen, Amp Fiddler) ? Ce choix était-il une évidence ? Partagez-vous la même vision de la culture africaine ?
Le choix de Tony Allen coulait de source. Il s’agit quand même du co-fondateur de l’Afrobeat, c’est le batteur de génie qui a créé ce fameux beat ! J’ai beaucoup de respect pour son travail, et cette collaboration a été une grande source d’inspiration. Pour l’aspect funky, j’ai pensé qu’Amp Fidler pourrait apporter une superbe contribution. Et la voix de Macy est capable de transmettre de telles émotions ! Personne n’est capable de chanter la joie et les pleurs de tout un continent de cette façon. Pour les arrangements cuivre et jazzy, j’ai fait appel à David ; il a tellement d’expérience. On voulait avant tout faire de la bonne musique et ressusciter les grands classiques de la musique africaine.

Quels sont les artistes africains qui vous ont le plus influencés ?
Sans hésiter, je dirais Fela ! Il a créé une musique qui vous transcende et qui continue à inspirer de nos jours. C’était un showman prodigieux et un musicien hors-pair. Il représentait la voix du peuple. Ses chansons étaient aussi puissantes que lui. Sa musique incarnait ce qu’il se passait là-bas à cette époque et ses textes restent encore d’actualité.

Si Questlove était une personnalité africaine célèbre, qui serait-elle ?
Je dirais toutes les personnalités africaines qui ont permis de promouvoir la culture africaine grâce à leur grande détermination et à leurs efforts. Nous devons prendre exemple sur elles afin de continuer à donner une image positive de l’Afrique.

Quelle est votre chanson d’afrobeat préféré ?
« Beast of No Nation » est incontestablement une de mes chansons afrobeat préférées ! Les paroles sont vraiment puissantes et les rythmiques sont tellement hypnotiques !

Could you introduce us this new project, Afro Picks, you present for the first time for Jazz a la Villette?
Well, the Afro-Picks project is a collection of 11 tracks that narrate an important part of the African musical history, relating the period when Africa was emerging from the euphoria of decolonization, sung originally by artists such as Fela or Miriam Makeba. It’s a selection of songs that advocate the beauty of the continent and its people and also denounce oppressive systems throughout the continent such as Apartheid during that time. The project offers a re-discovery of the past African classics to a new light, challenging today’s audience to question if these concerns are still up to date. It is a celebration of the African musical legacy with tracks that have been rearranged, hopefully to inspire tomorrow’s new compositions.

What was the starting point of this story? What were the main motivations to create this artistic project?
Some of the projects I have worked on in the past were already influenced by African music trends, and this was a great opportunity to collaborate with music legends such as Tony Allen and David Murray, to produce a new repertoire reflecting on the powerful rhythmic of Afrobeat music. I was also attracted by the idea of bringing a new and different perspective to what the past still has to offer, with a particular focus on a period when beyond the realm of creativity music was used to empower people’s visions of themselves and to reflect on their social conditions.

Afro Picks is a personal vision of the african historical music. What Africa evokes for you?
So many things! Africa is everyone’s original home. Beyond the negative aspects we all came across with throughout time, Africa had and still has so much to offer. On the musical perspective, it is unconceivable not to acknowledge its influence on today’s popular music. Besides the warmth, patience and talent of its people, it is an incredibly beautiful place where the people beyond the suffering, continue to smile and laugh at destiny.

Africa seems to have more and more impact on Afro-american visions of themselves. How could you explain this new position? Is it a return to afrocentrism due to global take of conscience?
I guess the connection has always existed between Africa and its diaspora in many ways. The 70s militant era can be quoted as the perfect example to illustrate this bond with the rise of movements such as afrocentrism in America or elsewhere.  I believe all African descents at the time realized they were all fighting for the same struggles, and music as tool of cultural revolution helped to spread that vision on both sides of the Atlantic. I don’t think that afrocentrism has ever left the conscious of the people who were willing to learn, command and transmit their history to the younger generations.

Have you ever been in Africa? If yes, what does this expérience reveals or show you about your vision of this continent?
Yes I have and my last trip was in South Africa for a DJ set. As I said earlier, when you are on the continent, you are just astonished with what people try to achieve. So many talented artists in every corner, making something out of nothing sometimes! And I definitely think that there are still much that would come from Africa on a cultural level at first and which will enchant the world over again.

Afro Picks is an exciting project mixing art and politics. Political engagement has always been a part of The Roots’s musical universe. Do you consider yourself as a permanent militant?
Unfortunately we still live in a world where inequalities resonate at it very core. As a musician, I have the opportunity to produce, could it be with hip hop or project such as Afro-picks, music that could reflect on today’s political or social concerns and voice it to a wider audience. As long as the struggle continues, as an artist and such as Fela and many others have brilliantly done before me, I have an understanding of how meaningful and positive messages in songs can impact on people and yes, I intend to carry on such endeavor.

How did you selected the musicians (David Murray, Macy Gray, Tony Allen, Amp Fiddler) working on this project. Did it was evident to work with these people or this musical association is based on a common vision of Africa’s culture?
The choice of Tony Allen was an evidence for me. He is as the co-founder of Afrobeat, there from it birth! The genius drummer behind the beat! And I hold a lot of respect to his work and it is being inspirational collaborating with him. For the funky aspect, I thought Amp Fidler could bring an outstanding contribution. As of Macy, her voice can just transcend so many different emotions! I could not see any other singer that could powerfully chant the joys and cries of a all continent. For the arrangements, I couldn’t think of anyone who has as much experience in writing for horn and jazz as David.  We all share a common belief on making good music that would revive African classics.

Who are the african artists who influenced you? Why?
I have to say Fela’s music has predominantly influenced me! He created a new transcendental genre of music, which we still draw influence from today. Besides being a great performer and musician, he was the voice of the people. His songs were just as strong as his lifestyle. His music undeniably embodies what was happening on the continent during that time and still reflects today’s situations.

If Questlove was a famous african people, which one it would have been ? Why ?
There are many African figures who have helped to promote the qualities of African culture. Many are great examples of self-determination and we should all consider how we could use their efforts and works to continue on drawing a positive image of the continent.

What’s you favorite afrobeat track ever? Why?
I would say “Beast of No Nation” is incontestably one of my favorite afrobeat tracks! The lyrics are powerful and the beats are just hypnotic!

Une musique passionnante, lumineuse et sensuelle, composée par un artiste animé d’un soucis permanent du détail et de la perfection.
